Play Reading Series

Fantasy Theatre Factory (FTF) at the Sandrell Rivers Theater presents its NYNW Play Reading Series. This program seeks to promote the creation of new works by South Florida playwrights and present them at the Sandrell Rivers Theater.

2022 Winners:

Who may apply:
  • Any South Florida resident from Miami, Broward, Palm Beach & Monroe counties.

  • Candidates must be at least 18 (eighteen) years of age at the time of submission.

  • Playwright(s) must be the sole author(s) of the material and must affirm that they have exclusive ownership rights to the new work.

  • Each playwright may only be a party to one play submission; no multiple entries.

 
Who may NOT apply:
  • Staff or Board Members of Fantasy Theatre Factory, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Florida Division of Cultural Affairs as well as their spouses or relatives up to the second degree of consanguinity are ineligible for consideration.

 
What are we looking for:
  • Unproduced original plays;

  • No adaptations;

  • Unpublished plays;

  • Never staged beyond simple readings;

  • No musicals;

  • Any genre, theme, form, or style;

  • Maximum of 8 (eight) cast members (Actors may play multiple parts);

  • Length of 30 minutes to 2 hours;

  • Once the work is submitted, new versions cannot be added.

 
About the winners:
  • Fantasy Theatre Factory will select between 4-8 plays to be presented as staged readings at the Sandrell Rivers Theater.

  • Winning selections may share dates with other selections at FTF’s sole discretion. For example, if a play is 90 minutes, only one play may be presented on a particular night, but if FTF selects 4 thirty-minute plays, then they may share a date.

  • Fantasy Theatre Factory reserves the sole right to schedule the presentation of the staged readings of winning selections in any manner that it sees fit in its sole discretion.

  • Playwrights must agree to be present for all public staged readings of their plays.

  • Playwrights must be available for audience talkbacks following each presentation.

  • Fantasy Theatre Factory will have the sole right to select casts, directors, stage managers, rehearsal dates, and times. Selected plays will receive at least 2 dates of rehearsals.

  • Fantasy Theatre Factory may choose to offer one winning playwright a fully produced World Premiere of their new work – subject to fee negotiations.

 
About the process:
  • Fantasy Theatre Factory will select a panel of FTF staff members in its sole discretion to review all eligible submissions.

  • The panel will review the plays in a blind submission process.

  • Plays will be scored utilizing the following rubric:

    • Quality of writing (65 %)

      • Character(s) development;

      • Well-developed dialogue;

      • Scene structure;

      • Plot cohesiveness.

    • Originality of concept (35%)

      • Creative style.

      • Covers new ground or addresses well-known topics with freshness and/or innovative techniques.

      • Thought-provoking and relevant content.

  • Go to www.ftfshows.com/plays to submit your play online.

  • Upload script with the playwright’s name and contact information. Plays must be in either PDF (preferred) or word format.
